The Orange Beach Grand Slam introduced a new format to Gulf Coast Tournaments at The Wharf -- all Catch & Release, No Live Bait, a Weighted Scoring System and Lots of Fun with Family and Friends.
Team Galati, Captained by Chris Galati were the only crew of the 24 boat fleet to capture the Tournament 'Grand Slam' by weighing a Tuna, Dolphin, Wahoo and releasing a billfish (White Marlin). The 64' Viking scored 453.5 points and etched their name in the tournament record books as the first ever Orange Beach Grand Slam Champions.
"I love catch & release tournaments and also the new format of this event. We had already released our white marlin, had a weighable tuna and dolphin and a box full of 19.5 pound Wahoos. But we kept grinding and then got the Wahoo we knew would complete The Slam!" said Galati.
The innovative tournament format split the prize money between the Grand Slam Category and the Catch and Release Category.
Southern Charm, with owner Ron Davis and Captain Bo Keough were the only team to release multiple billfish in the tournament.
As per tournament rules, the 63' Hatteras released three Blue Marlin while trolling only lures and dead bait. Winning Catch & Release and multiple 'Optional Categories' easily made Southern Charm the top earning boat in the tournament with a $77,560 payday!
"We had a great trip obviously, catching three blue marlin and a 154 pound tuna," said Davis. "This new format rewards not only catch and release and catching multiple species, but it really requires strategy from the captains. It was really fun and congrats to Team Galati on what they did this weekend, I am very happy for them and proud of our team too!"
The tournament had two divisions, a Sportfish and a Center Console Division. Reel Turner, a 34' Freeman was the Center Console Champion as well as the top earning center console boat!
The Orange Beach Grand Slam will Return to The Wharf in June 2020!
